Brand Masterclass at Innovation RCA

The Royal College of Art asked me back to run a ‘Brand Masterclass’ (their choice of title not mine!) for businesses that are starting up as part of their incubator programme – Innovation RCA.

It’s nearly 30 years since I went to the RCA where I studied Design Management. I managed to find my old security pass and we all had a good laugh at that before we got stuck in!

It was so lovely to be asked back to do this as I’ve always felt passionate about the importance of brand in building successful businesses. I don’t think most degree courses, or Masters’ courses for that matter, put enough effort in to giving students the core skills they will need in the real world once they graduate, especially if they want to start their own business. Branding is high on the list.

Adam and Karen came with me for moral and practical support! So great to go and do something like this as a team. Thanks guys!

We had 10 highly creative and entrepreneurial businesses in the room, ranging from fashion start-ups to innovators in Artificial Intelligence. So we had to be on our toes.

During the session, we shared our strategic branding methodology and tried to give the businesses a framework that they could use to build their own brands. We shared lots of practical examples from brands that we have worked with over the past 15 years. We started to solve some of their problems in the room and showed them that the solution is actually within their business already.

All in all, a great day that I hope showed them where to start.
