What does the future hold for our next generation?

Here I am with my rather large eldest son Josh when we went off visiting art colleges. This is outside Bourneville College of Art, where, 25 years ago, I started by own journey towards becoming a designer. It was quite an emotional moment to return with my son. A look into the past as he contemplates his future…

Anyway, put the tissues away, he’s leaving home in a few weeks and is off to Kingston University to do a Foundation Course in Art & Design. Hooray!

What kind of future does he have in front of him?

I believe that the value of design is better understood and appreciated 25 years on. But I worry that the paucity of good jobs for good graduates may leave him high and dry. He’s going to have to work really hard and build up a set of core skills that will set him in good stead. Like original thought, the ability to conduct good research (not just look on the internet), consumer insight generation, materials and process knowledge, teamwork, how to spell……

It’ll be fun seeing him develop, but I sincerely hope he’s not knocking on my door in four years time asking for a job.
