What’s the secret to being a great client?

At rbl, we believe the best way to create a powerful brand is to collaborate with our clients to co-create the brand they want to own. After all, it’s their brand not ours. We’ve always said the best clients are the best collaborators. Well, last week we put that theory to the test. We put the shoe on the other foot and became the client by inviting two young, talented filmmakers to spend 3 days with the team at rbl to make a short film about the agency.

We wanted a film that helped people ‘meet us before they meet us’ and, as we’ve already met ourselves, we wanted someone to come in and tell our story from a new-comers point of view.

Scott Carthy and Ben Pender, recent graduates of Kingston University, had just the kind of outsiders’ eye we were looking for (Check out Scott’s Vimeo site and make sure you watch his film 1050.6(c) about New York’s subway breakdancers) so we asked them to come on board.

We loved the way they worked because they listened first. Just like we do. They asked everyone at rbl some simple but searching questions. Just like we do. Then, they let the responses take them in a completely new direction. Just like we do. Then, they pretty much ignored the brief we gave them and decided to do something more ambitious. Just like we do!

We’ve seen the initial edits after 2 short days and one long night of filming in and around our studio. Interestingly, there’s not a single image of any of our people anywhere on the film, but it really tells you a lot about us! We love it already.

We hope that by giving ourselves over to the process, trusting Scott and Ben’s talent and being open to true collaboration, we’ll have proven to be good clients. You’ll be able to judge for yourself by the end of November when the finished film will be revealed…
